Nsuo Ase, Akuapem, Eastern Region, Ghana
Community Description
Nsuo Ase is a small village of about 105 people, located in the Akuapem mountains of the Eastern Region.
The main occupation of the people of Nsuo Ase is farming, growing crops such as maize, yam, palm, plantain, banana, vegetables, and many others.
About 90% of the people in the village are uneducated. A few years ago, the people of the village were provided with a basic school to improve the educational opportunities of children.
Residents strongly understand the concept of respect to one’s religion. Religions practiced are Christian, Muslim and traditionalist.
A yearly festival is observed called Odwira. This is a celebration of national identity by the Akan or Asante people of Ghana, in an area once known as the Gold Coast. The festival originated centuries ago as a time for people to assemble after the yam harvest, and was inaccurately called the Yam Festival by non-Africans.
Problem Addressed
For many years the people of Nsuo Ase have been struggling to access clean/ample drinking water, relying on an unsafe stagnant water source. The heavy use of synthetic agricultural chemicals contaminates the drinking water. In addition, free-range livestock share the use, resulting in widespread gastrointestinal illness.
Project Description
This project is to build a water system to serve the needs of the community.
Pipes will be run from a nearby village, located about 950 meters away to Nsuo Ase. A 2,000L plastic water tank will be installed for water storage, mounted on a 5-square-foot platform. A 2HP electric pump will be used to elevate the water to the tank.
Water Charity funds will be used for materials and skilled labor. Africa H2O will manage the project and organize the unskilled labor.

105 residents of Nsuo Ase will benefit from the project.
Project Administration
The project will be implemented under the direction of Nana Kudjoe Kesse, Executive Director and Chief Operations Officer of H2O Africa Care. This is another in a series of successful projects he has directed.
We are grateful to Solomon Amuzu, of Call to Nature Permaculture, who is providing additional assistance and oversight.
Monitoring and Maintenance
Once the project is completed it will be handed over to the village authority, which will take full control. A team from the village will be appointed to run the facility.
Small dues will be collected monthly to fix and maintain the facility when needed. The H2O Africa team will visit the facility occasionally to ensure it is being properly cared for.
