Saré Pathé Bouya Latrine Project – Senegal

Location
Saré Pathé Bouya, Department of Kolda, Region of Kolda, Senegal

Community Description
Saré Pathé Bouya is a village of approximately 500 people located in the region of Kolda in southern Senegal. It is about 7 km north of National Route 6 near

Mampatim. Most of the population belongs to the Mandinka ethnic group, but at least two small compounds are predominately Pulaar speaking.

The population of Saré Pathé is distributed over 29 compounds, ranging in size from 5 to 48 people, with an average compound size of about 17 people.

The local economy relies primarily on subsistence farming, with some sales of vegetables, cotton, peanuts and other crops. There is one elementary school and a middle school, as well as a health post serving Saré Pathé Bouya and the surrounding Pulaar communities.

Currently, 24% of households do not have a latrine at all. Of the 38 latrines in the village, only 18 (or about 47%) are covered. A large portion of the population regularly practices open-air defecation. This puts the entire population at risk for acute diarrheal diseases (as well as more serious illnesses such as cholera) because of the risk of contamination by people, animals and rain run-off.

During the first two months of the 2011 rainy season at least 65.5% of compounds saw at least one case of acute diarrhea, with many more possibly unreported.

The local health post is used as a birthing facility and as the site of monthly baby weighing and vaccination days that serve the population of Saré Pathé as well as four other neighboring villages. The site has never had a latrine.

Project Description
This project is to build 9 latrines in Saré Pathé Bouya. It will result in there being at least one functional pit latrine in every compound.

All work and purchase of materials will be coordinated by the PCV with the help of her counterpart Abdoulaye Sane and the local mason Malik Samoura.

Water Charity funds will be used for the purchase of supplies (cement, rebar and metal wire), and for the mason’s fee.

Each participating compound will be responsible for providing sand and gravel, digging their own pit, and assisting the mason when necessary.

Additionally, the village will provide volunteers to dig a pit for a latrine at the local health post.

In order to maximize the intended results of the project, the PCV will continue to lead lessons in proper hygiene and sanitation, including hand washing and the importance of covering latrines.

Project Impact
Over 100 people will directly benefit from this project by having access to a new latrine within their own compound.
