Remera-Rukoma Hospital Water Project – Phase 1 – Rwanda

Rukoma Sector, Kamonyi District, Southern Province, Rwanda

Community Description
The Sector of Rukoma is located in the District of Kamonyi. It is a rural site with minimal access to goods. Kamonyi District is located in the Southern Province and is made up of 12 Sectors. The Sector of Rukoma lies an hour west of Kigali. According to a recent National Census, the District of Kamonyi had approximately 265,365 people in 2006.

Although Kigali can be reached within an hour of Rukoma Sector, its pace of development has not been as fast as most other Districts in Rwanda.

Electricity was introduced in Kamonyi District in early August, 2010. This will result in increasing development, and the creation of much-needed jobs for community members. However, access to water continues to be a major challenge.

Remera-Rukoma Hospital is a District Hospital jointly operated by the Eglise Presbyterienne au Rwanda and the Government of Rwanda. It started operating in 1937 as functional health post where people could come to seek medical help.

The hospital serves patients who are referred there from the surrounding 11 Health Centers in Kamonyi District.

Remera-Rukoma Hospital provides many types of services to community members through various departments, such as Emergency Care, Surgery, Pediatrics, Maternal Health, Dentistry, Nutrition, Laboratory, ARV, Family Planning and Mental Health.

There are currently over ninety staff members working at Remera-Rukoma Hospital and two Peace Corps Health and Community Development Volunteers.

At present, water is not available in many rooms of the hospital due to problems with the existing piping in the system.

Project Description
This project will fix damaged and broken pipes leading to nine patient recovery rooms, the operating room and consultation rooms.

Many pipes and fittings will be replaced. Water will be pumped from approximately 10 km away in a valley below into the hospital rooms through sinks already in place in most of the rooms.

Project funds will be used to buy PVC piping, cement, pipe accessories and one new sink.

Project Impact
This project will benefit approximately 15,000 patients per year who are served at the center.

Peace Corps Volunteer Directing Project

This project will provide tremendous benefit for staff and patients at the hospital by bringing water to many rooms that are presently forced to function without running water. The improved hygiene to be made available will have a definite result of reducing sickness and disease.
