Location
Nanjota, Masasi District, Mtwara Region
Community Description
The village of Nanjota has a population of over 6,000 people. It is located in the Mtwara region, one of the hottest and driest of Tanzania, with temperatures around 90 °F year-round and an average of 40 inches of rainfall a year.
There is no electricity or running water anywhere in the village.
The Nanjota Primary School has 491 students, forms 1 through 7, and 7 teachers.
The village of Nanjota built 12 new bathrooms for the primary school two years ago.
Problem Addressed
There is no water in the bathrooms for sanitation or hygiene. The water tank at the school is cracked. Students must carry water to school every day, taking away from time spent in the classroom.
Project Description
This project is to build a water system to supply the bathrooms of the school.
Twelve 20-liter jars will be made, and one placed at each of the bathrooms. Each jar is made by filling a burlap sack with sand and covering it in cement. After 24 hours, the sand is removed and only the jar is left.
To make the project sustainable without water available at the school, a 1,000-liter plastic tank and rainwater catchment system will be added to the bathrooms so that students can refill the buckets without having to go all the way to the village water pump.
The tank will be transported from Masasi, the closest town. Four-inch PVC piping, cut in half, will be used in place of aluminum gutters because it is more cost-effective.
The school will provide the sand and water needed for the concrete and the labor to carry it.
Water Charity funds will pay for materials and labor costs.
Project Impact
491 students and 7 teachers will benefit from the project.
