This project has been completed under the direction of Peace Corps Volunteer Kelly Rogel. To read about the beginning of the project, CLICK HERE.
The project was to build a rainwater harvesting system for the school.
We completed our 5,000 L water tank project!
We were able to purchase a KenTank 5,000 L water tank from a town about 14 km away and had it transported to us. We also purchased materials to collect rainwater more effectively.
Once we had all the materials, we hired a local community member to build a cement base and to install the pipes. Not only will the water tank benefit the students at Lambwe Christian School for the Deaf, it also helped create job opportunities for a few community members.
The water tank is now full of rainwater, just in time for our long dry season! We are excited that we will have 5,000 L more water than we had last year. This will help reduce the number of times that students have to leave school early to fetch water. This also reduces the expenses of having to transport water from Lake Victoria, which is contaminated with Schistosoma which can cause Bilharzia. Students are able to use water collected in this tank for bathing (which helps reduce illness among students who live in the dorms), washing clothes, and drinking water.
We are grateful to Kelly for completing this excellent project, and again wish to thank Hope 2 Others Organization for providing the funding.
