Kralanh High School Well Project – Cambodia

Location
Kralanh Village, Kralanh District, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia

Community Description
Kralanh High School is located in Kralanh District, Siem Reap Province, approximately 52 kilometers west of Siem Reap Town on National Road 6.

The High School has approximately 1,300 students who come from 15 villages throughout Kralanh District. Most of the students are children of rice farmers and travel far distances from their rice farms to school on a daily basis.

Currently, the high school is relying on two small ponds located on the school premises as their water source. The water is unsanitary and unsafe for use for drinking and cooking by students and staff.

Project Description
This project is to build a well to supply Kralanh High School with a clean water source.

The well will be built in a central location at the school, where the students and staff will have easy access.

Water will be drawn from the well by an electric-powered pump. It will be easy to use, and has been determined by students and staff to be worth the additional cost of purchase and installation, and the ongoing costs for electricity.

The community has paid a contractor to come to the school to identify the best location for the well.

A member of the community who is a teacher at a neighboring high school and builds wells on the side will supervise the construction of the well.

The funds from Appropriate Projects will be used to purchase the materials as well as pay for the skilled workers.

The workers and the contractor (approximately 4 individuals) have decided to donate most of their time for the project which will take 2-4 days depending on a few factors, including weather and the depth of the water table.

To begin, they will dig 20 – 30 meters (depending on the location of the best water source). Next, the workers will position approximately 75 meters of PVC piping into the ground, and install the pump. Finally, they will lay the cement.

A permanent cover (.5 meters high) will be placed on the well to ensure that contaminants cannot enter.

The school will send a water sample to a laboratory in Phnom Penh to test for contaminants before the water is consumed.

Project Impact
This project will benefit approximately 1,300 current students and 50 staff members of Kralanh High School by supplying them with safe drinking water, water for hand washing, and water for cleaning and filling the two toilets.
