Ilia Chavchavadze Public School Number 1 Water Project – Georgia

Location
Kvareli, Kvareli Municipality, Kakheti Region, Georgia

Community Description
Kvareli (population 9,000) is a small town tucked into the Caucasus Mountains, about 2 hours northwest of Tbilisi. It’s known for its vineyards and beautiful lakes and thrives as a tourist destination in the fall and summer.

Ilia Chavchavadze Public School Number 1, located in Kvareli, serves 470 students, grades 1-12. Founded in 1897, the school has fallen into disrepair and is in need of major renovations and updates, including the installation of sinks for the student bathroom.

Since the school was first built, it has never had running water in the bathroom or sinks for the students to wash their hands. The administrators tried to organize a hand washing system, but without funding to purchase a pump and other necessary equipment, they were unable to move forward.

Recently, the school was able to purchase and install pipes, but the water only flows to the teachers’ bathroom. Because of this, however, it is now possible to reroute the water from the pipes to the student bathroom, but the school does not have the financial resources available to manage the project. What little funds they do have are spent on heating for the winter months.

Project Description
This project is to bring running water to the students’ bathroom and sinks for handwashing. Upon completion, there will be 2 working sinks, located outside of the boys’ and girls’ bathrooms.

School administrators will purchase the materials including a water tank, pipes, sinks, and taps. Labor workers from the community will install the new pipes, which will allow the water from the current pipes to be rerouted to the student bathroom. Using a water pump and new tubing, water will then be connected to the sinks, which will be installed by the workers.

The community and school administrators have shown great dedication to this project. They helped write the application and also developed the budget. They will also purchase the materials necessary, hire the labor, and ensure the project is completed successfully.

Water Charity funds will be used for the materials listed above and local labor.

Project Impact
540 people will benefit from this project, including 470 students and 70 teachers.
