This project is made possible through the partnership of WATER CHARITY and the NATIONAL PEACE CORPS ASSOCIATION.
Location
Saré Pathé Bouya, Region of Kolda, Senegal
Community Description
Saré Pathé Bouya CEM is the local middle school which serves Saré Pathé Bouya as well as several surrounding villages in the Kolda Region of Senegal.
Problem Addressed
The middle school does not have a bathroom, and many students therefore practice open-air defecation.
Project Description
The project is to construct two ventilated pit latrines at the local middle school. The bathroom will be a 3-meter by 2.5 meter building divided into 2 stalls separated by gender, each with aeration piping. The project aims to provide teachers and students–many of whom come from neighboring villages–access to a functional, sanitary, and safe bathroom and, thereby, reducing open-air defecation.
The middle school faculty will be involved in some of the labor, including pulling water from the well and constructing the building surrounding the latrines, and will provide food for the workers. The school will also pay the carpenter’s fee and a portion of the mason’s fee. Water Charity funds will be used for the purchase of materials including cement, sand, gravel, iron, rebarb, pipes, aluminum sheets, doors, and the transport of these materials to the site. The mason, who has already been contracted by the middle school, will be responsible for digging the pits, making the bricks, and constructing the building.
In order to maximize the intended results of the project, the PCV will continue to lead lessons in proper hygiene and sanitation, including hand washing and the importance of covering latrines, and will construct hand washing stations (“tippy taps”) near the bathroom.
Project Impact
At least 239 students and 17 staff members will directly benefit from this project. Elimination of open air defecation will contribute greatly to the health of the entire neighborhood, providing local flies much less fecal matter to contaminate food and water supplies.

Monitoring and Maintenance
Sare Pathe Bouya Middle School staff will overlook the project. They will also provide food, labor, and some funds. Students and teachers will be responsible for cleaning the bathroom and ensuring that water and soap are always available.
Comments
The village of approximately 500 people called Sare Pathe Bouya, is located in the region of Kolda in southern Senegal. Currently, the middle school serves both the village of Sare Pathe as well as several surrounding villages, and is without bathroom facilities. The absence of a bathroom is difficult for both the teachers and students, who must either return home to use the bathroom or practice open-air defecation, as some students come from as far as 12 km.
The construction of 2 latrines for students which are separated by gender will alleviate any anxiety and/or difficulties experienced by the students and teachers concerning the need to use the bathroom.
This project is a part of our ongoing Western Africa Water & Sanitation Program.
