Location
Antsakoana, Amparafaravola District, Madagascar
Community Description
Antsakoana is a small town north of the town Amparafaravola located in the Eastern part of Madagascar. Antsakoana is one of 20 communes in District Amparafaravola.
Rice fields make up most of the land in this region where there are 120,000 hectares of rice fields, with 15 hectares in Antsakoana. The livelihood of most of the people in the town is dependent on rice production. Each farmer has his own rice fields, but they work together in farmers’ associations on projects related to infrastructure, irrigation, and water works.
Fields located at higher elevations cannot be used because there is not sufficient water to plant rice during the dry season. The planting season normally begins in November and December, but because there is no water flowing to these fields they must wait until January for planting when the rainy season arrives.
Project Description
This project is to purchase and install a water pump for use by the members of Fanilo, the local farmers association.
The project will give the water control needed for the planting of currently unused areas, and for the application of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), a methodology aimed at increasing the yield of rice produced in farming. This will serve to increase the current production of 15 hectares of land to 20, resulting in an increase of rice production of 3 tons/per hectare during each planting season.
Water Charity funds will be used for the purchase of the water pump and transportation costs.
Fanilo will use dues to pay for the installation of the water pump. Members with knowledge of pump repair will provide the maintenance and repair of the pump.
Project Impact
The project will benefit 280 people who work in the fields and their families, including the 15 members of the association.

Comments
A new water pump for the rice fields will allow the association members to work more fields, beginning earlier. This will result in more productivity, yielding increased income.
Teena previously completed the Morarano Chrome Water Pump Project – Madagascar.
