Location
Trapeang Thmor Village, Kong Pisey District, Kampong Speu Province, Cambodia
Community Description
Trapeang Thmor is a rural farming village of 156 families located about 7 kilometers from Srang in Kampong Speu province of Cambodia. Of the 701 people who live in Trapeang Thmor, 351 are under the age of 18.
There is no access to electricity in the village, although some families use batteries to power lights at night. During the dry season, which lasts from November to March, families in Trapeang Thmor have very little access to clean drinking water. This results in many preventable illnesses.
Project Description
This project is to build a hand pump well in the village. It will be located close to a strip of houses where about 50 families will be within a one-kilometer walk to access the water.
The project was planned by Sameourn, who works for Volunteers for Educational Services in Asia, and the Peace Corps Volunteer, after consulting with the village chief Phan Chok.
Various drilling companies that drill wells in Kampong Speu were contacted to compare rates. They decided on Mao Touch Water Well Drilling company, based out of Phnom Penh. A discounted rate was agreed to if the community were to build the cement base. The community agreed to build with their own funds.
The well will be from 25 m – 30 m deep in order to ensure access to water year-round. At the top, there will be a hand pump and a faucet surrounded by a basin for water which will be built by the community.
Water Charity funds will be used to pay the drilling company to drill the well and install the pump.
Project Impact
230 people will benefit from this project. This is comprised of 50 families (out of the 156 families in the community) residing within 1 kilometer of the well.
