The project was originally designed to provide a reliable source of clean water for the patients at the hospital by installing a single large water distiller. A better solution was reached with the installation of three separate filters.
Kate reports:
Together with my counterpart, Tuya, we purchased three filter units from the capital city, Ulaanbaatar, and transported it back to our hospital in Sukhbaatar province.
Our original plan was to buy a large water distiller, but we were unable to locate a distiller that would fit our needs. After discussing our options with our hospital director, Munkhzul, we bought the three water filter units.
Two of the units we bought connect directly to the main water supply without electricity, and one unit connects to the main water supply with electricity (this unit is supplies hot water as well as cold). The hospital has agreed to pay for future filters from the capital.
When I arrived back from the capital a few weeks later, I was glad to see that my hospital had already installed and started using the filters. One was placed in the main kitchen, another was placed downstairs near the main lobby, and one placed in the outpatient unit.
Both the nursing methodologist and the head of nursing remarked that the patients and the workers of the hospital are using the water sources constantly.
My hospital and I want to thank Appropriate Projects for making this project possible. The director of our hospital said, “The clean water is very important to our health. I want to thank you for giving our hospital clean drinking water to improve the health of our patients and workers.”
