The project was to construct a latrine for the health center.
Matthew reports:
We completed the construction of a three-stalled latrine at St. Anthony’s Health Center. The Health Center mobilized the community to “top-up” the funds needed to make the project a success, most namely from hardware store owners (one cut the price of cement in appreciation for the health center’s role in serving the community).
The initial process involved the lining of the bottom of the pit with concrete, walling the pit with bricks, and applying a cement coating. A solid reinforced concrete slab was then poured to create a top for the latrine.
The walls were built with bricks and cement, and covered with a cement coating. Finally, the doors and roof were installed.
The health center has been motivated by this great project to set up a bio-gas kitchen for their patients and staff. This will enable them to put the waste of the latrine to use for cooking meals and lighting the kitchen building.
