Prey Kandeang Commune Latrine Project – Cambodia

This project is made possible through the partnership of WATER CHARITY and the NATIONAL PEACE CORPS ASSOCIATION.

Location
Prey Kandeang Commune, Peam Ro District, Prey Veng Province, Cambodia

Community Description
The village consists of 1,000-1,500 people, depending on who is asked and at what age they start counting the children. The common sources of income are farming (rice and hay), fishing, and sales.

Like most of Cambodia, a significant percentage of the population is quite young, and children are seen along the streets. The main highway to the Provincial town runs through the village, cutting and making a distinct separation in the village.

The primary school is the only one in the village. Secondary school students must bike to the commune center or moto to the provincial town.

Problem Addressed
At the Prey Kandeang Cluster Primary School, 235 students, Kindergarten through 6th grade, and 10 teachers lack access to sanitary and safe bathrooms. They currently have 2 stalls that have broken down over the last 20 years of use.

The toilet in one stall is not fully operational. Students are scared of the bathrooms, leaving girls to go home between breaks and boys choosing to use walls and bushes.

Project Description
This project is to add two bathrooms and renovate a third at the primary school.

The work of building and renovation will be done by professionals from neighboring villages.

Water Charity funds will be used for materials and skilled labor.

The school staff has raised $375 for the project. In addition, they will donate time during training sessions, which will cover hygienic practices as well as techniques to best teach and create sustainable habits. The education is based on the SuperAmma program that teaches the importance and practice of daily hygiene habits, without putting emphasis on germs. A club of the older students will be created to assist in hygiene promotion and leadership skills.

Project Impact
250 people will benefit from the project.
