Location
Prey Tamoong Village, Phsar Commune, Baribour District, Kampong Chhnang Province, Cambodia
Community Description
Baribour District is a district in the north of Kampong Chhnang Province, in central Cambodia.
The district is subdivided into 11 communes, including Phsar, which is in turn subdivided into 64 villages, including Prey Tamoong.
Phsar Health Center serves, as is the most accessible health center to 20 villages, with approximately 10,000 people.
The health center does not yet have electricity, and the timetable for it reaching this area is uncertain.
The health center has a covered shallow well with clean water but it is not readily accessible in the health center and it must be carried about 50 meters to the health center.
The health center currently has a water tank that collects rainwater, but the sinks in the health center are broken, the water valve is broken and during the 6-month dry season, the tank is empty.
Lack of available clean water makes general hygienic patient care and emergency care difficult. Also, this is difficult, particularly in the case of deliveries where hygienic delivery requires constant, easy access to clean water. Depending on the time, there can be 15 to 30 deliveries in a month or even more, at any time of day or night.
Project Description
This project is to provide easy access to clean water in the Phsar Health Center.
A closed system was begun by the health center, but they did not have the funds to complete it. In the closed system, water will be protected from contamination while it is transported to the delivery and inpatient rooms, or during storage.
A functional aluminum tank is already installed to collect and store rainwater. Sinks in the delivery and inpatient rooms are still serviceable but need minor plumbing repairs to work.
The director has purchased and laid PVC pipes buried from the well to the aluminum tank, which is elevated behind the health center, using health center funds.
Project funds will be used to purchase a diesel generator and electric pump to bring water from the well to the storage tank. If and when power lines reach the health center in the next several years, the power source of the motor can be switched as needed.
Project funds will also pay for a small amount of PVC pipe, and to hire experienced labor to repair the sinks and install the generator and pump.
Project Impact
The beneficiaries of the project will be the approximately 10,000 people in 20 villages serviced by the health center.
