Pethie School Water and Sanitation Project – Senegal

Location
Pethie, Djilor, Foundiougne, Fatick, Senegal

Community Description
Pethie is a rural village in the Djilor area. There are a total of 378 people living in 22 compounds with 42 households or families. The village chief is named Ngor Diouf.

There is no electricity or running water, and the village is approximately 2.5 km away from the nearest paved road. The people of Pethie are subsistence farmers, growing primarily millet and peanuts.

The primary school in Pethie was started in 2002. There are four teachers teaching the six primary school level classes. There is an enrollment of 103 students, 59 girls and 44 boys. Three new classrooms, an office, and proper school bathroom facilities were recently constructed in coordination with JICA, a Japanese aid program.

There is also a school garden that was constructed using funding from Peace Corps. The garden is managed by the students with the help of the teachers and used in school lessons.

Although there are latrines at the school, there is no running water, or any water at all, that is accessible to the latrines for proper latrine sanitation and hand washing.

There is a cement-lined well that is used by the students to water the garden, but it does not have proper covering, which allows dirt and other debris to contaminate the water.

The students also lack any kind of water purification, and most of them drink directly from the well.

Project Description
This project is to improve the water and sanitation of the school latrines, provide a cover for the well, and set up drinking water sanitation stations inside each classroom.

For the latrines, project funds will be used to purchase a large barrel for holding water. The barrel will be kept full by the students, who can pull and bring water from the well.

This barrel will have a tap installed, allowing it to also be used for a hand-washing station and also to clean the latrines.

The well cover will help to protect the well water from sand and debris that is blown in by the strong wind storms in the area. It will be made by a local iron worker and transported to the school by horse-drawn cart.

Each classroom will also get a drinking water sanitation station. Currently, the kids drink directly from the well, which can cause diarrhea and other intestinal illnesses.

Project Impact
This project will directly affect every student at the Pethie primary school, as well as the teachers who work there, for a total of 113 people.

Comments
Having properly treated water available at the school, for cleaning, washing, and drinking, will reduce illness, and also teach the students good health and hygiene habits.
