Community Description
Pellel Kindessa is a rural community of around 1,100 people is located south-eastern Senegal. It is a sprawling village with five neighborhoods nestled at the base of the mountains next to the Guinean border. There are no businesses or boutiques in the town and pretty much every family makes a living off farming corn, cotton, and rice.
There is no electricity and water is drawn from wells scattered around town. As the dry season draws into the later months, one by one the wells start to dry
up and the villagers are forced to walk further across town to one of the few deeper wells or the one-hand pump near the school.
The Pellel Kindessa Women’s Group had a garden last year but the project fell apart because the neighboring stream ran dry. This year the group was given a much better plot of land low at the bottom of a hill near another stream. Unfortunately, this stream runs dry beginning in January, prime dry-season gardening time.
Project Description
This project is to provide a well next to the Women’s Group Garden to enable year-round irrigation of the garden.
A well will be dug next to the already fenced and prepared garden so the women can continue to water their vegetable beds. As it is located at the bottom of the hill, it will not need to be dug very deep to ensure that the base remains below the water table during the entire year.
The well will be dug by two husbands of women from the group. After they finish, another member of the community will line the well with cement.
In addition, the community has received a commitment from a local NGO called AfriCare, which will provide a hand rope pump for the top of the well to make drawing water more efficient.
Project funds will be used to pay for the cement to line and cap the well in preparation for the rope pump, and to pay for the digging of the well.
Project Impact
The 30 women of the Women’s Group and their families, totaling 300 people, will benefit from the project.
