Final Report Western Africa Water & Sanitation Program
This project has been completed under the direction of Nana Kudjoe Kesse, Executive Director and Chief Operations Officer of H2O Africa Care. To read about the start of the project, CLICK HERE.
Nana reports:
Upon receiving the project funding from our partner “Water Charity”, the school authorities, a local contractor was then informed where the decision-making meeting was held.
Work then started two days after the meeting. A suitable location on the school compound was selected for the toilet/washroom facility. H2O team then drove to a nearby shop and purchased all the needed supplies for the project. Main items purchased include wood, cement, nails, zinc roof, flat rocks, toilet seats, blocks and paint. H2O team, the contractor and the school authorities then sketched the plan that outlines the project structure.
The boreholes in the Magalela community have vastly improved the amount of access to clean water. As a result, the pupils and the community now have access to safe drinking water, sanitation, hygiene, and help to improve the pupil’s overall educational experience. These water sources have also reduced the amount of time and energy it takes local households to get water for their daily needs.
o A pit (manhole) measuring 10 feet long by 5 feet wide, with a depth of 15 feet was dug. After that, the cement blocks were then laid from the bottom to the upper ground surface forming the side walls. The upper ground surface was then cemented with a mixture of stone, sand, concrete and supportive iron rods in building a solid flat surface platform. Four little holes were them made through the platform with the aid of a wooden mold serving each of the toilet units where toilet seat will be positioned.
After the platform was left to dry for three days, the block extension was then laid up to the roof level. It was then divided across into four (4) main units.
Finishing touches include roofing, plastering, doors installation, painting, and labeling.
The facility was then inaugurated and handed over to the school as soon as the painting was done. With joy and happiness, teachers and school children sung numerous praise songs in appreciating the project.
