The project was originally designed to build 25 latrines in the village, but great project management and community participation led to the construction of 54!.
William reports:
Thank you for supporting our latrine project in southern Belize. We exceeded all expectations.
After the funding of the project, the village decided to contribute all of the wood that was needed for the walls of the latrines, so we moved the money originally allocated for that into buying more materials such as cement, steel, sand, and zinc, which were otherwise less-accessible.
We were then able to purchase materials to build 54 latrines instead of the original number of 25! This was a huge success for the village because each family now has their own private latrine. This means that there is greater convenience and they will last longer.
An added benefit was that there were many people involved in the construction who now have the skills to build more latrines in the future.
