Location
Gwakiongo Town, Mirangine District, Central Province, Kenya
Community Description
Nyakiambi Primary School is the most overpopulated schools in the area. Mirangine experienced a huge influx of people during the 2007 violent Kenyan elections. These IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) are still present in Mirangine. They rent farming plots and homes within Gwakiongo town. Therefore these IDPs send their children to the nearest public school which is Nyakiambi Primary School.
Problem Addressed
Nyakiambi School currently has one large tank that is filled with rainwater. The water is used for the handwashing stations, cooking meals for the students and staff, cleaning of the classrooms, and drinking water.
The tank was sufficient to provide water for all the students before the population influx. However, with the now extremely large student body, it gets depleted quickly even during the wet seasons. During those times, students must carry water from wells to use at the school.
Project Description
This project is to build an additional tank at the school.
A 6,000-liter tank will be purchased and shipped from Nakuru town. A platform will be built and the tank will be installed.
There are existing gutters on the main building for the large tank. Gutters will be added to collect rainwater for this tank.
The tank will be used specifically for the kitchen. One large meal and two tea breaks are cooked for the students and staff every day, and this tank will ensure that the children get a properly balanced diets with boiled grains, beans and maize.
Water Charity funds will be used for the purchase of the tank and additional materials.
The school will provide for the transport of the tank and materials, the labor for the construction of the base and installation of the tank, and the ongoing maintenance.
Project Impact
782 students and 18 staff will benefit from the project.

Comments
This is an important infrastructure project for a school that has been forced to deal with a large influx of students. The two tanks together will ensure that the school has an adequate supply of water for the students during the entire year.
