Mutoma Primary School Rainwater Harvesting Project – Kenya

Location
Mutoma, Butere District, Western Province, Kenya

Community Description
Mutoma Primary School is located on a compound hidden among sugar canes and maize, and it cannot be found unless one already knows where it is. The children come to school carrying 5-10 L of water each day, barefoot and muddy because there is no water on the school compound.

The school obtains water from a borehole at the local church. Because there are so many pupils using the water, it is usually brown by the end of the day. The school has limited resources, and the children many times suffer from water-borne diseases and nutritional problems.

Project Description
This project is to build a rainwater harvesting system at the school.

A 5000 L tank will be purchased and installed on a cement base. Gutters will be placed along the main office building on the primary school compound. The gutters will then be connected by piping to the tank.

The project will be completed by John Manono, a man from the local community.

Water Charity funds will be used to buy all supplies, and pay for skilled labor as well.

The project will progress as follows: First, the base will be constructed using sand, cement, bricks and ballast. Next the gutters will be attached with screws and support and joint brackets. Piping will then be run to the tank. Finally, a pipe and a tap will be attached to the base of the tank.

The primary school principal is supportive and is happy that the children will not have to carry water every day to school anymore. There are some supplies on the school compound that he is offering for the project. The local church has offered to help raise money to cover costs that remain beyond the budgeted amount.

Project Impact
1,173 people will benefit from the project, including 1,143 students and 30 teachers and workers.
