The project was to build 10 latrines in 10 compounds.

The project has been completed according to plan.
To begin, I went to the trusty hardware store in the regional capital, Kedougou. Purchasing the materials (i.e. cement, rebar, iron wire, PVC air vent pipe) was relatively easy, although arranging transport was a longstanding battle.
Furthermore, without cell phone service and with a river to cross, I was unable to inform my work partner in Kewoye when the materials would arrive.
Fortunately, I was able to let them know to start digging the holes. This took a bit longer since people were splitting their times between harvesting in the fields, and digging the holes for the latrines. Nevertheless, since the transport of the materials was delayed three times, this worked out well enough.
The trained masons of the village were experienced and extremely helpful in constructing the latrines, and the families were ecstatic to be receiving them.
I look forward to coming back to see the new fences erected at the individual compounds, hopefully followed up by a handwashing station project.
