Community Description
Keur Serigne Thioye is a small rural Wolof community located in the Nioro subregion of Kaolack near the Gambian border. There are approximately 400 people living in 26 compounds.
The primary source of income in the area is farming of peanuts, millet, and corn. However, the past few years have seen poor harvests, and many villagers are struggling to provide their families with nutritious food.
Some community members practice small-scale vegetable farming. Additionally, a community woodlot has recently been created in a shared village field that will eventually provide fuelwood and fruit for personal consumption and sale.
The village currently has one well that is approximately 45 meters deep and several active pipelines providing water within the village for a small fee.
The community members are extremely active and dedicated to self-improvement. They wish to start a community garden. However, all the water sources are located within the village itself, which is over 200 meters from the site of the proposed community garden.
Project Description
This project will extend the pipelines from an existing tap to a community garden located just outside of the village.
The garden will contain vegetables and a tree nursery both for consumption within the village and for sale.
This garden will also serve to instruct community members on gardening techniques such as double-digging, compost, soil amendments, and proper spacing.
Additionally, a live fence will be implemented around the periphery of the garden, teaching new skills and providing for garden sustainability.
Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the piping, fittings, and fixtures. The digging of the trench and laying and covering of the piping will be done by members of the community.
A small fee will be charged for the use of the pipeline, paid for by profits from the garden.
