Community Description
Ikobe is a small village in the Manga district of Kisii, Kenya. It has rainfall during the entire year.
The Ikobe Health Centre is Ikobe’s closest medical facilities that serve as a place for the villagers to access medicines, seek treatment, and baby delivery access. With its noted efficiency, it serves as a hospital to nearby villages in the district as well.
Problem Addressed
The community health center has no running water. They currently must pay people to fetch water from a nearby river. If there is an emergency they have a 20-liter bucket with reserved water.
With water from the river, they have to take the time to disinfect and filter it before it is ready to use, and they have no adequate means of storing it. Even after filtering there is still a chance that the water collected from the trash-filled river might still be contaminated.
Project Description
This project is to build a rainwater catchment and storage system at the clinic.
A concrete base will be built alongside the clinic upon which a 3,200-liter storage tank will stand. Gutters will be installed along the roof and connected by a pipe to the tank.
The work will be done by the local workers who installed the water system at the school, using basic tools to do the job.
Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the tank, two tin gutters, necessary piping, and a tap, and will also pay for the tank transportation.
The medical center will provide the funds for the concrete base, support wire, and the labor fees to install the tank.
Project Impact
Over 30,000 patients who are seen at the hospital each year will benefit from the project.
