Community Description
Igoma is a rural village in the Njombe District. The majority of the 2,200 people are sustenance farmers. The village is in the mountains and the farms are on the hillsides.
The nearest town is 28 kilometers away, and transportation is limited to one small van that leaves in the morning and returns in the evening.
The median income per household is about $250.00 per year. About 14 % of the population has HIV/AIDS and there are approximately 150 orphans in the village, most due to AIDS-related death.
There is limited access to water and no electricity. The Igoma Primary School teaches through grade 7, but there is no secondary school.
There are currently 485 students attending the Igoma Primary School. The school had a toilet facility. However, it collapsed in October 2012. The village then built a small temporary facility. They have been notified that if a permanent structure is not built by June 2013, the school will be closed until it is completed.
Project Description
This project is to build a new toilet facility at the Igoma Primary School.
The project will be implemented under the direction of the Head Teacher, Village Chairman, and the Project Committee, in collaboration with the Peace Corps Volunteer.
The building will be constructed using bricks, concrete, and stone. The roof will be tin and the doors will be wood. The structure will be 20 meters long and 5 meters wide. It will be designed with 10 stalls for the girls and 10 stalls for the boys. There will be a central internal wall extending the length of the building.
The holes will be dug to 4 meters in depth and 2 meters wide, and then they will be lined and reinforced using concrete and chipped stones. The latrines will be ventilated using rubber or plastic piping. The plates will be concrete with raised foot placement.
The construction schedule is as follows:
At the end of the rainy season, the first of May, the village members will start digging the holes, this process will be finished at the end of May. During June, the villagers will make bricks and gather sand. In addition, they will frame the holes (using concrete and stone). July, the bricks will be collected from each of the 5 sub-villages and the actual construction of the building will begin. It is projected that the toilet construction will be completed by the last of July or the first of August.
The Head Teacher and the village chairman have compiled a budget of $5,700. This includes the cost of material supplied by the village and the labor that will be donated. The majority of the cost of this project will be for labor and for materials the villagers will make and gather.
Water Charity funds will be used for all other materials, including cement and hardware for the doors.
Project Impact
485 students will directly benefit from the project. However, the project will impact the entire village of 2,200.

This is a critical project for the school, as the school will close if the project is not implemented. There are tremendous community support and participation, with the vast majority of the expenses and all of the labor being borne by the village members.
This project exemplifies the benefit of the Appropriate Projects model to be able to react immediately to a crucial need with no administrative delay.
