This project has been completed under the direction of Abdou Aziz DIEDHIOU (Aziz), Coordinator, Mangrove Project, WWF/WAMPO. To read about the beginning of the project, CLICK HERE.
The project was to install 50 Sawyer PointONE filters in various locations in the Foundiounge Region of Senegal.
Aziz reports:
This project, involving the installation of 50 water filters in the Department of Foundiougne, Region of Fatick, Senegal, has been completed.
Households in many villages in Foundiougne lack secure access to sanitary water. The goal of the project was to distribute water filters to enable local communities to have ample access to clean drinking water on a sustained basis.
The locations chosen were in the schools, public facilities and compounds of the villages of Mbam (25 filters), Gagué Mody (8 filters), Gagué Bocar (8 filters), Paravant (3 filters) and in the island neighborhoods (6 filters).
Essential work leading to the success of the project was provided by village chiefs, imams, students, and members of women’s conservation and environmental groups.
The pictures illustrate installation sessions in the villages and the satisfaction among residents of the communities involved.
The project was organized by Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Laura Coberly, who had previously undertaken several projects in partnership with Water Charity.
The Sawyer filters used in this project will provide residents with an easy-to-use method for of ensuring safe water for many years to come.
Residents are very pleased with the results of the project and have asked to broaden the program to include filters for all villages of the municipality in the Department of Foudiougne as well as the island villages. Such action would contribute to food security of communities, facilitate access to drinking water, and contribute to the sustainable development.

Water Charity’s Executive Director, Beverly Rouse, and Chief Operating Officer, Averill Strasser, had the pleasure of spending an afternoon accompanying Dr. Mamadou Diallo, Species Programme Manager, WWF Western Africa, in liberating the filters from customs at the Dakar Airport.
We extend our thanks to Aziz for completing this important project, and to Laura for setting it up.
