The project was to construct 15 latrines in Diara Pont.
Jackie reports:
I started the project by going to the hardware store and purchasing the materials. I then had to seek transport for the 2 tons of materials to be delivered a distance of 75 km away.
Unfortunately, delivery was delayed by a week, despite arranging it three times, but fortunately the households that were getting latrines were still digging their holes. The community was very self-motivated and did a lot of the work without my knowledge of it happening! I was very proud.
My primary counterpart was very helpful in storing and helping distribute the materials to community members who had completed digging their holes.
The masons, who were trained last year, organized among themselves to do the masonry. A man from a nearby village came to make the bamboo fencing.
I had a health volunteer from a village 5 km away come to assist me with the meeting to discuss the importance of sanitation. Primarily women attended, but they were told to convey the messages to their husbands and children.
The community is happy about the new latrines.
