The project was to repair the two wells in Diamel.
Erin reports:
The Diamel Well Improvement Project is finished and supplying healthy water to the community.
Muusa Ballel Diol acted as the community facilitator for the project. Muusa purchased all the necessary materials: cement, rebar, and attaching wire. He also utilized local transport services to haul supplies to the community.
Muusa hired one well digger, Diara, and his apprentice from a nearby town. The well diggers constructed two one-meter concrete extensions to add in the two community wells.
Once these extensions were finished, Diara descended into the wells and dug into the muddy, murky water, sending the mud up in a bucket where his apprentice dumped out the contents.
After digging out a square meter of mud, Diara and community members worked together to lower the extensions into the well. The extensions were reinforced, and clean water filled the wells.
The construction only took a few days. For Diara and his apprentice, the work was easy and straightforward. However, the impact this project has on the community is much more than the sum of its parts.
The chief of Diamel expressed his sincere gratitude for this simple repair, and many community members, men, women, and children, repeatedly said the well was ‘ne moyyi no feewi,’ very good, fixed perfectly.
Community members now enjoy cooking, bathing, and drinking clean water year round!
