The project was for the construction of an eight-faucet hand-washing station at the school, designed to connect to a previously-built tank fed by a water catchment system.
The Municipality of San Pedro Carchá provided the transportation of the materials from the city to the school. The fathers of the students gave a day of work to help with the project. A skilled mason was ultimately retained who was able to complete the job. All in all, the actual building took about 12 days.
The project resulted in a good experience for the school and the Parent Council, in that they were forced to confront difficulties such as alternative designs, the hiring of labor, recruitment and management of volunteer effort, and completing a project on time and within budget.
The school and the council are committed to proceeding to improve the septic tank, so that the greywater from the station is properly handled.
