The project was to provide a water supply to the health center, and to purchase and install three sinks for sanitary handwashing.
Justin reports:
The Phnom Touch Health Center has completed its installation of sinks. It took approximately ten days to complete this project.
One sink was placed in the immunization room, which often acts as a diagnosis room as well, especially for small children. These small children often have common colds and because of that, one of the many benefits of securing a sink is that it provides opportunities for staff members to not only address the treatment, but also proper sanitation which may lead to disease prevention.
Another sink, has been placed outside near the bathroom. This is important, because it is also easily accessible to patients so that staff members will be able to discuss the importance of proper sanitation to all patients. This is so important especially in rural Cambodia, where diseases related to diarrhea can be so easily prevented, through hand sanitation, yet diarrhea remains one of the greatest health challenges in Cambodia.
The final sink was placed in the pre-natal care room. Since the majority of the patients are pregnant mothers, the need for midwives and staff members to practice hygienic conditions has been a challenge over the last several years. By securing a sink within the room, the health center staffers now have the ability to not only protect themselves through proper hand sanitation, but also the numerous patients they see throughout the day.
In addition, the staff members have posted hand washing signs in several places of the health center in order to maintain a constant awareness to hand sanitation. Through the addition of these sinks, this health center will be able to not only practice safe hygiene standards, but will develop additional health credibility in the Phnom Touch community.
