This project has been completed under the direction of Peace Corps Volunteer Carla Burns. To read about the beginning of the project, CLICK HERE.
The project was to build 12 new latrines and upgrade 6 existing latrines in Ndiassoume.
Carla reports:
The Ndiassoume Latrine Project was a great success, producing, 11 brand new latrines, and fixing 5 previously-existing latrines.
All holes for the latrines were dug by family members of each compound.
The latrines were 1.5 m x 1.5 m and had a standard square cement top.
The masonry was performed by two men from the community. They produced two to three latrines per week, due to the fact they were also working on other community projects (school and mosque).
Every household in the village currently has a working latrine.
To follow up on the importance of hygiene I held a seminar discussing handwashing, proper latrine care/cleaning, and basics of nutrition and intestinal health.
Many people in my community have thanked me and requested that I continue the project to surrounding villages.
The experience of working closely with my entire village to achieve a beneficial outcome will be one of my greatest service memories. Thank you again for all of your help and support.
We again wish to thank The Soneva SLOW LIFE Trust for providing the funding for this project.
