This project has been completed under the direction of Peace Corps Volunteer Zachary Howarth.

Zachary reports as follows:
On June 9th, 2016, Chaliwa Village in Lundazi District, Eastern Province had a 50-meter deep mono pump well built by STE Drilling of Chipata, Zambia, with the help of the Water Charity and PCV, Zach Howarth.
The drilling began in the morning and the pump was completely installed by sundown on the same day. STE Drilling provided a very large in-kind contribution valued at 10,860 ZMK. Moreover, STE provided repair training and gave the community materials in order to repair the borehole in the event of a malfunction.
The remaining community contribution was provided by the members of Chaliwa Village in the form of an in-kind contribution consisting of raw materials and labor. The community donated bricks, building sand, stone, and the labor required to deliver these raw materials. Additionally, they built the surrounding drainage basin around the pump. This drainage basin serves a water runoff that ponds into a watering hole for the local cattle and other animals.
The pump is located centrally in the village, cutting the distance of water retrieval from 2 KM to less than 50 meters for most members of the community.
The pump is now fully functional and is providing clean water for the 116 residents of Chaliwa as well members of 3 other surrounding villages. Indirectly this pump will provide water to over 200 people. The community is overwhelmed with joy and is very thankful for the contribution of the Water Charity.
We are grateful to Zachary for completing this excellent project. Although the project has been completed, we are still accepting donations to cover the funds we have advanced, so that we have money on hand to continue to work with PCVs in Zambia on projects such as this one.
