Community Description
The Boyo Division is located in the Northwest Region of Cameroon. The predominant ethnic group is the Kom people, renowned for their hospitality and work ethic.
Alim is a village of approximately 850-1,000 residents. Boyui is a neighboring village downhill, with an approximate population of 750-950 residents. These two villages shared an existing water system.
Ameng is a community where the NGO Better Family Foundation (BFF) has just completed a water project. However, it only services the portion of the village called ‘Ameng-Down’– which is where the majority of the villagers live. That leaves Upper-Ameng (approximately 250 people) without water, as they are located uphill.
After the Alim/Boyui water scheme revamp project was completed, it became obvious that the spring being used is insufficient. Its yields have reduced over the past few years due to environmental degradation. Moreover, it is an open and unprotected source, leading to contamination of the water supply. Presently villagers trek up to 1 km to reach this source.
Project Description
This project will build a newly-identified protected spring located in Alim.
The spring is located above Ameng-Up, meaning that it will eventually be able to supply piped water directly to the villagers there.
To protect the spring, the community will dig until they reach the impermeable layer/bedrock. The water engineer will instruct the community on making the water channel using clean stones.
After the channel is created, the community will fill the rest of the space with clean stones and cement over the top of it. This will dam the water and leave it cleanly collected and adequately protected from animals and other organic materials.
Other parts of the community contribution will be carrying stones, carrying sand, cement and all other construction materials, as well as all unskilled labor.
Water Charity funds will be used to pay for cement, sand, bricklayer/engineer labor, and a few pipe fittings to create the protected spring source.
The community has already received training in various topics over a month-long period. A refresher course will be conducted after community work days.
Project Impact
The immediate beneficiaries will be 210 people directly serviced by the new spring source. In addition, 1,500 people will enjoy new the source as a result of reinforcement of the existing system.
