The project was to bring running water to the bathrooms at the school. Although the scope of the project was changed, it still brought needed service to the school.
Thomas reports:
This project was designed to bring a reliable source of clean water to Abasha School No. 1 to be used for drinking and to allow students to wash their hands and flush the toilets.
A well was built with a hand pump on the school grounds for the stated purposes. However, as of yet, there is still no running water in the bathrooms.
The well is used constantly as a source of drinking water and as a handwashing station and is built so that it will last a long time. For the time being, the students have to go outside to use the water. The school is waiting to receive additional funds to fix the pipes in order to bring water to the bathrooms.
Before the well was built, the school had another sink, which is on the town water system. This water is not as clean or cold as the new water pump. Additionally, the old sink often doesn’t work, as the city of Abasha has many water outages. The new well, however, always works because it is run by a hand pump.
The well took about 3 weeks to complete. At first, the well and hand pump was built, and a week later a concrete sink was added, as well as a concrete structure to protect the pump.
Abasha School No. 1 Director, Dodo Dolidze, says “The well is very important for our school because it gives students a reliable source of water for drinking and cleaning. We are very grateful to Appropriate Projects for the generous donation!”
