Silimoli Dispensary Toilet Project - Vanuatu

Silimoli Dispensary Toilet Project - VanuatuLocation
Malaliu, Nguna Island, Vanuatu

Community Description
Nguna Island is located 10 miles off of the northern tip of Efate, across the Undine Bay. The Silimoli Dispensary is located in the village of Malaliu, about 4 miles inland.

The Silimoli Dispensary serves as the only health clinic on the island of Nguna for approximately 1,500 people. It also serves as a site for training and workshops.

Problem Addressed
The Silimoli Dispensary does not have a useable toilet for patients, as the bush toilet on the property is no longer functional. At this time, patients must ask another villager to use their toilet, or, in an emergency, use the toilet designated for nurses.

Project Description
This project is to build a toilet at the dispensary.

Silimoli Dispensary Toilet Project - VanuatuThe project will be implemented under the direction of the Silimoli Health Committee “Team of 5". The committee will organize the construction crew with the project supervisor, Tokot Paul.

An existing decrepit and nonfunctional building will be renovated. It will be cleaned and painted, a door and lock will be added, and a toilet will be installed.

Piping will be installed to connect the toilet to the septic area next to the structure.

A large hole will be dug in the ground and cement walls will be dug to hold the tank.

The plastic septic tank, with a 200-liter capacity, will be purchased in Vila, and will be driven to the wharf in a truck and brought over on a boat. Then another truck will carry it up the hill to the dispensary. It will then be placed in the hole and the pipe connected.

Silimoli Dispensary Toilet Project - VanuatuA large ferro-cement water tank across from the structure will provide water for cleaning the toilet after use. There will be soap and water available at the tank for hand washing.

Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the tank and materials, including PVC pipe, fittings, and fixtures, cement, paint, and plastic.

The community will provide the labor and transport of materials.

Project Impact
The project will benefit over 1,500 people who live on Nguna Island and rely on the dispensary for health services.
