Tanda Mboudaye Well Improvement Project – Senegal

Location
Tanda Mboudaye, Kaolack, Senegal

Community Description
Tanda Mboudaye is a village of approximately 900 people, and is located several kilometers off of the Route National in the region of Kaolack, roughly 60 km from the Gambian border.

The primary language and ethnic group is Serere, with a mix of Pulaar and Wolof as well. The village has no electricity or running water, and is comprised largely of subsistence farmers.

The village currently has two wells that are in use, and one that has become contaminated. The two working wells provide water for drinking, washing, and cooking for all of the 66 compounds in the village, with almost 200 women pulling water daily. Both wells are cement lined, approximately 15-20 meters deep, and were constructed in the 1970s. The two wells are lacking covers, opening them to possible pollutants, and they create safety hazards for the women, children and livestock.

The third well, which is contaminated, needs to be repaired to be made functional, and then covered.

Project Description
This project will improve the two active wells in the village in addition to repairing and improving one well currently in disuse.

Three rebar and cement well covers will be constructed. Each will contain two metal doors to allow for the drawing of water.

For the construction of the well covers, a metal worker and a mason will be hired. The metal worker will construct two half-circle metal doors with handles that will be joined together in the center by a hinge, so both will be capable of being open at the same time. A metal hook will be hung from the center of the well to facilitate having both doors open at the same time. When the covers are completed the mason and the metal worker will install the cover on the well and cement it in place to ensure that it stays secure.

The third well is currently being contaminated by debris that is falling from the walls of the well. A specialist will be hired to go down into the well to repair the faulty cement work, decontaminate the water and re-cement the lining. It will then be covered to prevent contamination.

The Hygiene Committee of Tanda Mboudaye will direct the project, and an experienced mason and metal worker will be hired to do the labor.

Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the materials, including concrete, rebar, wire, and metal doors.

Once the project has been completed, the women and children who utilize the wells will attend trainings covering the proper usage and maintenance of the wells, and also methods for keeping drinking water clean and sanitary to prevent the spread of disease.

Project Impact
The entire village, consisting of over 900 people, will benefit from safe water delivered from the 3 wells.
