Romny School #11 Water Project – Ukraine
Romny is the rayon center in the Sumska oblast in northern-central
Ukraine. It is a city of approximately 50,000 people, and is over 1200 years old.
Romny has been an important part of the region, serving as a military, cultural and economic center in various capacities throughout its history. More recently, Romny has been a manufacturing and agricultural hub.
However, as economic conditions have declined, much of the industry that once thrived has disappeared. Availability of government funding for restoration and infrastructure maintenance has also seen a large decline, leaving local infrastructure and housing in various states of disrepair and decay, particularly the city’s water delivery and sanitation systems.
Due to the age of the buildings, as well as diminished funding for repairs, the plumbing network supplying the daily water needs of these students does not meet health and safety standards. Presently, much of the piping leading directly to and from the existing sinks is corroded, dirty and leaking.
This project is to install 4 sinks in 3 buildings at the school, and connect them to the existing plumbing network. Piping that is not serviceable will be replaced.
The project is being implemented by a committee of concerned administrators, teachers and parents at the school.
Local repair workers will assist with the demolition and reconstruction. Funds already raised within this group will pay these workers. Additionally, members of this committee who have some construction experience will contribute their time and efforts free of charge.
Project funds will be used to purchase the sinks, piping, and other materials.
460 students, 35 teachers and administrators, and 12 maintenance staff will directly benefit by the decreased health risks.
Peace Corps Volunteer Directing Project
The project will reduce the risk of using contaminated water or leaking wastewater.
There has been significant local effort in the planning, and a commitment of money and labor to ensure its success.
