Pellel Kindessa Latrine Project – Senegal

Location
Pellel Kindessa, Kedougou Region, Senegal

Community Description
Pellel Kindessa is a rural community of around 1,100 people is located south-eastern Senegal. It is a sprawling village with five neighborhoods nestled at the base of the mountains next to the Guinean border.

There are no businesses or stores in the town and pretty much every family makes a living from farming corn, cotton, and rice. There is no electricity, and water is drawn from wells scattered around town.

The people of Pellel Kindessa are looking to carry out a project to build new latrines throughout the five districts of the village in successive stages, according to funding.

Project Description
This project is to build 10-15 latrines in Pellel Kindessa.

The people of Pellel were informed between the months of November and December about the potential to have new latrines for their own family compounds and over 60 families have signed up.

Each family will be required to dig a hole in 2 x 2 meters, a minimum of 20 meters from the nearest water source, in preparation for the latrine. Each family will also bring the sand and gravel to the site and pay a small amount of money to subsidize the construction (the equivalent of $10 USD, or about 20% of the total latrine cost).

Project funds will be used to purchase materials, including cement, rebar, and PVC pipe, and to pay for the skilled labor and transport of materials.

The mason, Thierno Diallo, was trained in the construction of Ventilated Improved Pit latrines (VIP) during a previous latrine project carried out by the village’s previous Peace Corps Volunteer in 2009. That project built 55 of the first latrines Pellel.

Project Impact
200 people will benefit from this phase of the overall project.

Comments
With this new project (and the potential of successive phases) the number of latrines in the village can be doubled, thereby reducing common illnesses such as diarrhea, which stem from the lack of proper latrines.

Peace Corps Volunteer Eric Lella previously completed the Pellel Kindessa Women’s Garden Well Project – Senegal.
