The project was to create a rainwater catchment and harvesting system to provide water for the school.
Anna reports:
Thanks to Water Charity and the sponsors at Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College, of Canterbury, Victoria, Australia, we now have a water catchment system that is helping out the school in such a positive way.
We were constantly struggling with water due to a borehole that was always in need of a repair and the next closest source of water being a good distance away, but now we have a large storage of water that comes from the roof of our kitchen/dining hall via gutters that pour straight into the large water tank.
During rainy seasons the school will be able to build the supply up so that when the borehole isn’t functioning we can still have a supply of water to do the daily tasks that require water, such as cooking the food for the children, watering the crops that we have in our school farm, washing and cleaning, and, of course, drinking.
The construction was completed by several of the teachers and some local skilled labor as soon as school was out for vacation. Supplies were bought and within a few days the work was completed.
The process was seamless, and now Mundika School for the Hearing Impaired can set into a new term without the worries of having enough water to make it through the months that the students are boarding here. It also allows us to share more water with the community if they have a need that they are unable to meet at their own homes.
