The project was to improve a water source by digging it deeper and building a spring box, lined with stones and cement and covered with a cement cap.
Nikki reports:
Construction itself took 2 1/2 days and was supervised by an engineer from Rural Water in Kasama, Zambia.
The biggest hang-up was the community contribution – 1,000 bricks, 1 ton of crushed stone, and K 2,500 (~50 cents) donated from every household to buy planks. In Zambia, people are used to flat-out gifts from donors and move at their own time, so it took many months to get these materials.
Edwin Chitoshi and BanaAmose Mwenya were especially vital to the success of the project.
Two additional improvements are scheduled, the plastering of the top of the spring box and construction of a wall to direct water flow and prevent erosion.
