The project was to purchase and install a water tank at the school.
Irene reports:
The project began construction on the end of October. The construction was supervised by the school director and was performed by local villagers. The project was completed within a little over a month (this was due to a week-long holiday that caused a break in construction).
The water tank was purchased and installed, and water was supplied for the toilets and handwashing station. In addition, the existing bathrooms were repaired and upgraded.
The project went fairly smooth with the exception of one problem: The ground that was initially supposed to be dug into was filled with a rock. This caused the position of the water tank to be moved slightly.
When I went to visit the elementary school the day of completion I was able to see children use the water that was newly made available. The principal was beaming from ear to ear because now his students had water to wash their hands and flush the toilets.
A student said “I wish I had something like this at my home, I cannot believe that I can just turn this (the knob) and there is water!!! I am so happy, I want to wash my hands all day!”
The principal also expressed that the children love the opportunity have water to help flush the toilets and wash their hands…for some, this is a new experience and they like to just feel the rush of the water on their hands.
Not only was this project able to help the children of the school gain access to clean water but it also gave a job opportunity for a local villager.
