The project was to build two toilets at Kindirbaev Secondary School for the use of teachers and support staff.
Joanna reports:
The goal of this project was to build a new Latrine for E. Kindirbaev School’s 200 teachers and staff. The current toilet was unsanitary and unsafe for use. This goal was met, and the project was completed within 3 weeks of its start.
The project took longer than expected, as we had the coldest/longest winter in over 70 years, not allowing us to break ground until April.
At the start of the project, the school’s administration purchased all the materials, including shovels, cement, bricks, windows, doors, and wood. We were able to purchase all materials in Barskoon Village, thereby helping the local economy as well.
Next, older students and teachers worked together to dig the hole for the latrine. After the hole was complete a cement floor was made to cover the hole. Then teachers constructed the walls of the latrine out of bricks. Finally, a metal roof was placed on top, and two windows and two doors were installed.
All money spent from Water Charity funds was used for the purchase of materials. School staff and students completed all the labor.
The project was a huge success, and it will have an extremely positive effect on the sanitation and health of the 200 teachers and staff.
