Community Description
Chum Kiri was founded in 1993, and is the newest and poorest district in the southern province of Kampot. It was one of the first areas captured by Khmer Rouge forces in the early 1970’s and Pol Pot’s followers did not concede defeat in the area until 1998.
In the 25-plus years that the Khmer Rouge were in control, all schools were closed. Since the area was re-integrated, a high school and 12 primary schools have been built, but due to the prolonged hostilities in the region, development has been extraordinarily slow compared to other districts in Kampot province.
Within the past year, the 12 km east to the national road has been paved and the north-south road has been improved from a lane-and-a-half of potholes to 3 lanes of excellent gravel road. This road improvement has opened many new opportunities for the district’s inhabitants.
One opportunity is easier access to the high school. Attendance at the high school is expected to increase by 15% in the 2012-2013 school year due to improved road conditions, with additional increases in the following years as more people move into the district.
The Ang Chak High School has 1890 students. 80% are in grades 10-12, with the lower secondary students who also attend school on the property making up the remainder. There are 60 staff members, including 23 who live in dormitories on the school grounds. There is not sufficient water to meet the needs of the school.
Project Description
This project is to drill an additional hand-pump well at Ang Chak High School.
A local company that owns a drilling rig will be contracted to drill the well. Included in the contract will be a good hand pump, as well as a concrete pad to divert waste water away from the well.
Water Charity funds will be used for the contracted well-drilling services, hand pump, well casing, and concrete.
The high school will provide $200 additional funds to complete the project.
Project Impact
2,130 people will benefit from the project, including 1,890 students, 60 staff members, and 180 nearby villagers who will use the well, especially during the dry season when their rainwater cisterns run dry.

This is a necessary infrastructure project for a school with limited resources that has to serve a rapidly increasing population.
Bruce previously completed the Hun Sen Ang Chak High School Latrine Project – Cambodia, the Samarky Primary School Well Project – Cambodia, and the Angmotreysatram Primary School Latrine Project – Cambodia.
