Birkelane Centre de Sante Latrine Project – Senegal

This project is made possible through the partnership of WATER CHARITY and the NATIONAL PEACE CORPS ASSOCIATION.
LocationBirkelane Centre de Sante, Senegal
Birkelane, Kaffrine, Senegal

Community Description
This project is  located at the Centre de Sante (Health Center) in Birkelane. Birkelane is a town in the region of Kaffrine in central Senegal. The Centre de Sante is a hospital at the district level.

Problem Addressed
To improve sanitation and hygiene practices in Birkelane through the construction of latrines.

Public defecation is not unusual in Birkelane. The construction of public latrines is necessary, not only to maintain the integrity of the community but to encourage lasting health behaviors. A baseline assessment in Birkelane showed that many members in the community would also appreciate increased access to latrines. Peace Corps Senegal is therefore interested in building 4 latrines within the community. In order to effectively determine the feasibility of building these latrines, the first will be built, as a trial, in the Birkelane Centre de Sante.

Project Description
One latrine will be built in the Centre de Sante. There will be one space for men and another for women. A  faucet will be available to ease the cleaning and hand washing process. The latrine will be free of charge to hospital patients, staff and visitors.

Latrine in Birkelane Hospital, Senegal

This project is estimated at 383,800 F ($670.80). We are anticipating that the funds will be received by March and building should be completed in April before the raining season begins. Success or failure of this project will determine how and when to proceed with other latrines within the community.

Project Impact
Improving the infrastructure of health structures contributes greatly towards patient management and care. The standard of the World Health Organization is that each health center be equipped with at least 4 latrines/ toilets- one for staff, one for male patients, one for female patients and one for children. Birkelane’s Centre de Sante currently has only one latrine. The hospital consults with and treats over 96,000 people in the district and hosts numerous meetings over the course of the year. The need for public latrines in this space is substantial. This document elaborates on the project plan and the proposed contributions and expectations from Peace Corps.
