Niamina West Well Rehabilitation and Handwashing Tour—The Gambia

The Niamina West Well Rehabilitation and Handwashing Tour will fix wells in eight villages. Niamina West is among the 11 districts of the Central River Region of The Gambia. It is bordered with Jarra East District and stretches from the South Bank Trans-Gambia highway up to 22 kilometers north towards the River Gambia. The district consists of mainly Mandinka, Wollof, and Fula tribes who continue to live in peace and harmony. The district is also well known for its preservation of culture and tradition, especially the traditional ‘’Kankurang’’ festival, as well as the production of renowned kora traditional griots like Jaliba Kuyateh.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT COMMUNITY

This community is made up of Fula tribesmen. The community depends on subsistence farming and traditional animal rearing. It is about 6 kilometers off the Trans-Gambia highway via Choya. The community lacks clean drinking water. The main twin handpumps that supply water for the village are nonfunctional and the current water source cannot serve the large population of the community.

Build Concrete water trough, Replace Cylinder, Install 11 pipes (Stainless steel), stainless steel rod couplings, 2 conversion heads (twin pump), pedestal, plus handwashing station.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT COMMUNITY

This community is situated close to the river Gambia. It is a remote village and it is often neglected. The community has only one water source which frequently breaks down due to poor materials. There is a severe lack of clean drinking water in this community and outbreak of diarrhea is common among children, according to the head of the village. The community depends on subsistence farming. Animal rearing has dropped due to a lack of water. This has caused a significant increase in poverty in the community.

Replace Cylinder, rod couplings, axle and bearings, build concrete water trough, plus install a new handwashing station.


Pinai Mandinka Village   GPS: 13°32.869  W015°16.945    Estimated Population: 600

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT COMMUNITY

This community is inhabited by Mandinka tribesmen who engage in traditional methods of subsistence farming. The community is about 3 kilometers off Trans-Gambia road via Choya. The village is currently facing severe water challenges. The main water source has not been functional for some time.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Replace conversion head, cylinder, build new concrete water trough, replace check-nuts, rod couplings, install 7 pipes (stainless steel) plus handwashing station.


Pinai Fula Kunda Village   GPS: N13°33.055  W015°16.964   Estimated population: 120

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT COMMUNITY

The community lives side by side with their neighboring village of Pinai Mandinka. It is also a subsistence farming community with some Fula tribe members engaged in nomadic animal rearing. This community is also facing severe water shortage. The one and only water source in the community has not been functional for many years, resulting in the community walking kilometers to neighboring villages searching for water.

Dalaba Village  GPS: N13°35.608  W015°12.951  Estimated Population: 650

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT COMMUNITY

This community is situated along the Trans-Gambia south bank road. It consists of Mandinka and Fula tribe members who engage in subsistence farming. The community has increased in size as a result of the migration of Southern Senegalese coming to settle in the community. This has resulted in water shortage and at times it results in minor arguments and conflict. The current water source is not enough to cater to the community’s 650 people. The other water source is nonfunctional. If the nonfunctional water source is repaired, it will end the water shortage.

Kumbaney Buniadu Village-  GPS: N13°36.176  W015°12.595  Estimated population: 500

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT COMMUNITY

This entire community of about 500 people depends on only one hand pump, which barely works. “We are always walking several kilometers to nearby villages in search of water,” said the Alkalo (village head). “Our community has suffered for so long due to lack of clean drinking water,” he said. The community, situated along the Trans-Gambia South Bank road, is a Fula community that engages in subsistence farming. Lack of clean drinking water has caused some families to migrate to other villages, leaving behind their traditional village or settlement.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT COMMUNITY

This community is about 7 km off the trans-Gambia south bank road via Dalaba. It is a subsistence farming community that consists of Fula and Wollof tribe members. Both tribes live harmoniously side-by-side. The community is faced with a severe water crisis. The only water source for the community has not been functioning for a long while, resulting in villagers drinking from an open well, which is causing some health problems for the villagers – especially children. Some will travel to neighboring villages seeking a few liters of clean drinking water. This has caused some physical and economic trauma to the community.

Replace rod couplings (stainless steel), 2 Cylinders (twin pump), conversion head and build concrete water trough, plus install handwashing station.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT COMMUNITY

This community is about 10 kilometers off the Trans-Gambia south bank road via Dalaba. The community is made up of Fula and Wollof tribes who engage in subsistence farming. The community has a primary school which is among the top schools within the district. Neighboring villages also send their children to the school to learn. The community’s water source is broken. As a result, there is a severe water shortage in the community.
