Novomykolaivka, School Number Two Water Project – Ukraine

Location
Village Novomykolaivka, Verkhnodiprovsk Region, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine

Community Description

Novomykolaivka is a town of around 4,000 citizens, situated about an hour and fifteen minutes outside the City of Dnipropetrovsk. Nestled alongside the famous Dnipro River, Novomykolaivka is home to domestic farmers, pensioners, and a significant workforce that commutes to the city for work every day.

There are two schools in the village that serve the community and the surrounding villages. School Number Two has 160 students from first to eleventh grade, as well as 30 staff members.

Problem Addressed
The village’s water treatment facility is located about 20 kilometers away from Novomykolaivka and is very inconsistent in pumping water to the school. Because of this, several times each month the cafeteria is unable to make food for the all of the students and staff. This usually results in classes being shortened or cancelled all together.

During winter months, as temperatures drop to well below zero, students often do not wash their hands before or after lunch. There is also a shower room outside of the gymnasium which is never used after class because it is too cold. The cold water causes major hygiene issues during the winter months, with many students falling ill throughout the season.

Project Description
This project is to build a water storage system and install water heaters at the school.

A one-square-meter reservoir will be installed in the school cafeteria. When water to the school is available, the tank will automatically be filled with up to 1,000 liters of water. When water is cut off to the school, the school cooks will draw from this tank, making is possible to cook for all students and staff.

A pump will be installed to circulate the water, not only to the cafeteria, but also to the school’s toilets and sinks. This will keep the water in the tank moving and keep it from becoming stagnant.

For dispensing warm water hygiene, an electric water heater will be installed near the handwashing station. This 1,500-watt tank will hold up to 100 liters of hot water and be ready for use within one to two hours.

The second water heater for the two shower rooms will be a 5- to 12-kilowatt instant-flow system. It will be installed in the nurse’s office.

All equipment will be ordered over the internet and delivered through the Nova Poshta system. It will be retrieved from the Rayon center, 15 minutes away, by school volunteers.

All of the equipment will be installed by the school’s handyman and the school’s shop teacher.

Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the equipment and materials.

School officials will use school funds, as well as raise money from parents, to purchase plastic tubing and valves.

The school will renovate a boy’s and a girl’s shower room that have not been used in the last twenty years.

Project Impact
This project will benefit 160 students and 30 staff.

Comments
Water will be available for cooking at all times. With warm water available, more students will be able to wash and take showers, keeping students healthy, in school, and learning daily.
