The project was to build a septic tank for handling of waste at the boarding school.
Blake reports:
The sanitation project at Pondok Pasetren Dorrotut Thoblin in Jombang Village, Jember District, East Java Province, Indonesia has been completed successfully.
Completion of the project proceeded as planned under the direction of Pak Lukius, who supervised the designing and construction of the project. Purchasing was taken care of by Pak Nawir Rasyid who is in charge of operations of the boarding school.
The unskilled labor for the project, including prepping the site for the cement foundation and hauling building materials, was performed by students and members of the boarding school staff.
Construction was completed by Jombang residents. The skilled workers poured, set, and sealed the concrete foundation as well as built retaining walls. Once all concrete dried, PVC pipes were set for exhaust, in and outflow valves. Finally, the septic tank was sealed using stones, concrete, and iron rods for support.
I want to personally thank Ahmad Syairofi, an English teacher from a nearby vocational school in Jombang. With his knowledge of the community and English ability, the numerous meetings at the puskesmas and boarding school ran smoothly.
Dr. Agus Yadi, the head of the Jombang Puskesmas, has promised to survey and evaluate the success of the project in the years to come. By his estimation, the tank will not need servicing for more than 10 years.
Many students and village residents will benefit directly from this project by better protecting their water from contamination, ultimately reducing illness.
Thanks go out from the residents in Jombang, the Peskesmas, the staff of the boarding school, and from me, to Water Charity, and to all of my friends and family members who supported this project and helped make this sanitation project a reality.
We are grateful to Blake for completing this important project.
