Community Description
Mawingu consists of a total population of 14,418 and roughly 3,002 households. It is extremely remote, and the people are poverty-stricken.
There are five surrounding villages. Many IDPs (internally displaced people) migrated to the Mawingu area and the government bought them a plot of land named Shalom. Although many of the IDPs were re-settled, there are still over 900 families living in tents on that plot of land.
The only accesses to water that these families have are two dams, shared with many animals, the closest of which is 20 km away. The children are forced to go to school without water.
There are 10 primary schools, with 500 to 900 children attending each. Only one has a water tank.
About 5 kilometers away is a village called Karugutu, with 300 families. Karugutu Primary School has 852 students, comprised of a nursery school and standards 1-8, and six teachers.
Project Description
This project is to build a rainwater catchment system at the Karugutu Primary School.
The system will consist of gutters attached to the roof of the school, connected by PVC piping to a large plastic water tank for storage.
The 5,000 to 10,000-liter tank will be purchased at the nearby town of Olkalou and transported to the school.
Water Charity funds will be used to purchase and transport the materials, including the gutters, fittings, fixtures, and tank.
Members of the community will install the gutters, piping system, and tank.
Residents of the surrounding community will be allowed to access the water tank on weekends and after school hours.
Project Impact
2,200 people will benefit from the project, most directly the students and teachers at the school and the residents of the surrounding houses.
