Mboro, Thies Region, Senegal
Community Description
Mboro is a relativity small coastal city of roughly 30,000. It is located 5 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 85 kilometers north of the capital city of Dakar. Mboro is one of the few areas within Senegal that can effectively grow vegetables throughout the entire year, due to its high water table.
Although fishing is a large part of the local economy, vegetable production is by far the majority income/job-generating source. A large part of the population is dependent on local farms to produce everyday foods. Many families are, in one way or another, tied to a relative’s field.
Mboro is also an up-and-coming tourist destination due to its proximity to the ocean. Currently, two hotels are being built in order to fulfill the need.
Problem Addressed
Farmers in the area do not know the appropriate techniques needed to maximize output. Furthermore, they lack the water sources needed for the proper irrigation of their fields.
The Master Farm concept, taught by Peace Corps Volunteers in Senegal, has proven to be extremely effective in demonstrating modern farming practices. The work of Master Farmer Cheikh Senghor falls into this category.
Cheikh has a well on his property. However, because of the lack of water within the Master Farm, roughly one-third of the field is completely unproductive.
Project Description
This project is to provide a water system for the irrigation of the Master Farm.
A PVC pipe will go five meters into the water and connect ten meters above the water, for a total of fifteen meters of pipe.
A pump will be installed to draw water from the well. It will have a 50 mm suction port that will be able to pump 600 liters per minute on maximum power. It will have a metal cage around the motor itself to protect it from damage.
Water will be pumped into an existing pipe system to allow the water to flow into basins to be distributed. This will allow a large portion of the field to be watered.
The Master Farmer, two workers, and the PCV will buy, transport and install the pipe system and pump.

The system will be monitored and maintained by the Master Farmer, in collaboration with the PCV.
Comments
The improvements will increase the amount of land that can be used for demonstrations for future agricultural classes held there. Improved agricultural practices will benefit the local farming community in the time to come.
A hot-season turnip demonstration will display the proper use of biological pesticides for 20 local farmers, as well as farmers who just happen to stop by.
The Master Farmer will also be able to provide for his family and the extended family that he supports. He is one of the few members of his family who has the ability to produce food and generate income. He will also have an increased number of crops that he will be able to sell in the local market, improving food security throughout Mboro.
