Community Description
The Kilagano Secondary school serves the entire ward of Kilagano. There is a hostel on the grounds to house up to 48 young ladies, ages 14-20, who attend the school.
The facilities are meager but livable. However, the young ladies at the hostel experience water shortages and are forced to walk long distances in search of water. This leads to missing class and not preparing for exams properly. Also, searching for water past dark is very dangerous for the girls.
Project Description
This project is to build a rainwater catchment system at the Kilagano Secondary School.
A base will be built, and a 2,000-liter container will be purchased, transported and installed. Gutters will be purchased and installed to capture water from the roof of the Girls’ Hostel. Piping will connect the gutters to the tank.
The water will be used for sanitation purposes, including washing, bathing, washing clothes, and cleaning the latrines.
The materials will be purchased in Songea town, which is 60 Kilometers outside of the village, and transported either by the district car or by Dala dala.
The stand will be round and made of bricks supplied by the village. It will be held together and covered by cement.
The gutters will be made out of aluminum, the same kind as the roofing of the hostel. It will be hammered flat, shaped into gutters and hooked by wire to the roof.
Water Charity funds will be used for the materials, including the barrel, cement, piping, and aluminum, and for the transport of the materials.
Members of the village will build the base as and attach the gutters and piping.
Project Impact
48 young ladies living at the hostel will directly benefit from the project. The other students and staff will indirectly benefit.
