Community Description
Kounkane is a village in Senegal with about 3,000 people. It attracts students from about 35 surrounding communities for educational purposes, as it located on the main road, and is relatively large, A few homes have running water, but most residents rely on wells for their water supply.
Project Description
This is a follow-up project to the Kounkane Ecole Privee 1 Well Project – Senegal, which was recently completed under the superb direction of PCV Emily Morris. Details of that project concept, progress, and conclusion may be found HERE.
Ecole Privee 2 is the second of two schools for children who cannot attend the public schools because of either behavioral or learning problems. It does not have a well, so it is difficult to maintain adequate water for the use of the students, and to maintain sanitary conditions.
The school receives no state funding. The nominal fee to attend is used to pay the salaries of the teachers.
This project is to construct a hand-dug well at the school. The well will be dug by local laborers, and then a local mason will do the concrete work.
The funds will be used to pay for the labor, and to pay for materials, consisting of concrete and a pulley system.
The dollar amount of this project is slightly less than for the completed one in that a small contribution was made by another charitable organization that will pay for the cost of the cover.
Project Impact
This project will affect the health and wellbeing of 1,000 people. It will provide water to a school where none exists at present.

Comments
This project furthers the objectives of Water Charity, which call for replicating successful projects, spreading appropriate technology, and ensuring sustainability.
Successful completion of projects motivates and empowers the community, and brings others in to help in the process
This area is fortunate to have a high water table, enabling the construction of a well without the use of expensive well-drilling equipment.
The project for the Ecole Privee 1 well was extremely successful, having a very high impact for a low cost. Why not do it again in a different location, serving a different school population?
